Ilan Stavans, author ofOn Lent Words: A Memoir of Languageand general editor ofThe Norton Anthology of Latino Literature, dubbedThe Moor’s Accounta exciting reimagining of just one of the foundational chronicles of exploration of the brand new World and an indictment of the uncontainable hubris exhibited by Spanish explorersa worthy stepchild of Don Quixote de la Mancha.
Her most recent novel,The Additional Americans, is about the suspicious loss of life of a Moroccan immigrant in a California community. The repercussions of his death bring together a diverse ensemble of heroes whose unseen connectionseven although they remain deeply divided by race, religion, or perhaps classare slowly revealed. It is at once children saga, a murder mystery, and a love tale, infused with questions about America’s dangerous legacy of violent discrimination. The Additional Americansconfirms Lalami’s status as one of the country’s most delicate interrogators, probing at the mistake lines in family, and the wider world (Financial Times).
